Who can call Lifeline?

Anyone living in Australia who needs support in a crisis including family and friends supporting someone who is suicidal. There’s no limit on age, although it’s worth noting that the Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800) and Kids Helpline (website) has been established specifically to provide counselling for people under 5-25 years, so young people can call this number as another option.

How does it work?

When you call Lifeline on 13 11 14 (it’s a free call from most mobile phones), you’ll be put through to one of our trained Crisis Supporters who will respond to you with warmth, empathy and respect.

 

The role of our Crisis Supporters isn’t to tell you what to do; instead, they’re here to help you find relief and explore various coping strategies, and to link you with any additional support you may need, including community and professional services in your area.

People contact Lifeline about many issues, including anxiety, depression, loneliness, abuse, trauma, grief, loss, and stresses from work and family. Preventing suicide is always our primary objective, so in every call we check the person’s current safety and ask if they have any thoughts of suicide.

About our service

Lifeline Northern Beaches provides two inter-connecting telephone support programs for people experiencing suicidal thoughts, or for concerned family members. These programs cover a period of 2-8 weeks.

 

Short-term support: This starts after you first call Lifeline. Once your current risk and situation has been assessed, your Crisis Supporter will connect you with appropriate resources who can help you, such as doctors, counsellors, psychologists and psychiatrists.

 

Long-term support: Some callers who have suicidal thoughts will be connected to our Suicide Crisis Support Program (SCSP). As part of this program, callers will receive weekly calls from a specially trained, highly experienced Crisis Supporter for up to 8 weeks.

The statistics

Every day almost eight Australians die by suicide, with seven attempted suicides every hour.

 

Suicide is the leading cause of death in men under the age of 45 and women under the age of 32.

 

In a typical year at Lifeline Northern Beaches, our 180 volunteers answer over 65,000 calls from people in crisis.
