Volunteering with us

We’re lucky to have the support of many businesses across the Northern Beaches, who help with everything from fundraising to in-kind donations. If your organisation feels passionately about preventing suicide, and supporting better mental health and wellbeing in our community, why not get on board?

A rewarding experience

At Lifeline Northern Beaches, we are lucky to be supported by over 600 volunteers who make our services possible. That said, there’s always room for new volunteers, so if you’d like to get involved we’d love to hear from you. As well as helping us care for people in our community, you’ll meet new people and even learn new skills. Not to mention have fun along the way!

What kind of things do volunteers do?

Our policy is to match people to suitable roles rather than the other way around, luckily our organisation is so diverse, there are jobs to suit almost everyone. Here’s an overview of some areas where volunteers help.

Telephone Crisis Supporter. Every year Lifeline Northern Beaches trains about 90 volunteers in Telephone Crisis Supporter skills. Learn more here >

Office. Admin, finance, marketing & communications, and human resources skills are all invaluable to us here.Working in our shops and at our Book Fairs is ideal for those with retail experience (or anyone who is just good with people).

Warehouse & logistics. With all the clothes and book donations we process, transport and warehousing help is much appreciated.

Events. Volunteers with events and project management experience play a major role in putting on our events.

Support services. From trained counsellors to those happy to drop in on elderly community members, we have room for many volunteers across our programs and services.

How much time do volunteers need to give?

It’s really up to you. We value everyone’s contribution, and know that everyone has different commitments they need to work around. We have many casual volunteers (for example, those who help out on our Book Fairs), while many others commit a small amount of time on a regular basis. Even an hour every fortnight can make a great difference.

Book Fair Volunteers

Want to volunteer once in a while? Our Book Fairs are a great place to start!

If you love books, helping at Lifeline Northern Beaches’ Book Fairs could be a great volunteering opportunity for you. It takes around 150 volunteers to run each Book Fair, so as you can imagine, we always welcome new helping hands.

What jobs need to be done?

Volunteers help to do a wide range of tasks, including:

  • Setting up tables
  • Moving boxes of books and other sale items
  • Maintaining replenishment of display tables
  • Staffing our customer service desks and payment area
  • Packing up at the end of the Fair

Support from local businesses is always appreciated

We are always happy to hear from any local businesses who can offer Community Leave to staff so that they can assist with the setting-up or dismantling of our book fairs.
