Training

Training has been part of Lifeline Northern Beaches’ activities for a long time – without it, we wouldn’t be able to provide the extensive services we currently deliver. While we train the many volunteers who work as Telephone Crisis Supporters, we offer a range of other training options to the broader community too.

Telephone Crisis Supporter training

Every year Lifeline Northern Beaches trains around 90 Volunteers in our Telephone Crisis Supporter Workplace Training (CSWT), a Nationally Recognised Training program on behalf of Lifeline Australia (RTO 88036). These dedicated volunteers take calls on Lifeline’s twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week Telephone Crisis Support Line 13 11 14 and last year Lifeline Northern Beaches answered 63,891 calls for crisis support.

By volunteering your time and skills to Lifeline Northern Beaches you will be supporting people, in crisis, reducing the risk of suicide in our community. Some of the crises our callers experience includes: suicide, mental health issues, traumatic life events, loneliness, domestic and family violence, addictions, family and relationship issues, natural disasters, bereavement and day to day life stresses. When you volunteer for Lifeline Northern Beaches you will be making a difference to the lives of the almost 1 million people who contact Lifeline every year.

So, what is the benefit to you? You will enrich your own life through personal growth, new life skills, professional development, meeting new people, connecting with your community and saving lives.

“The training was fantastic! I so looked forward to every Wednesday evening to find out what we would learn and practise. It’s life changing and has taught me many skills to use, not only with our callers but in my everyday interactions. Having been on the phones for some time now, I can see how the training has prepared me to have confidence supporting people in need”

Community training

Lifeline Northern Beaches Training team’s mission is to develop the skills and knowledge in our community that enable us to be supportive of those who may be at risk in times of crisis and to equip individuals, families and the community be resilient and suicide-safe.

Accidental counsellor

Resilience and wellbeing are essential for everyone to manage life’s stresses on a day to day basis. Sometimes, however, life can overwhelm us and the opportunity to share our troubles with an empathic person who listens and cares without judgement can be just the thing we need to get us through a difficult time.

Do you know how to be that caring person that can support a family member, friend or colleague who is in a crisis? Lifeline Northern Beaches Accidental Counsellor Training can help you be the support someone else may need.

Managing Challenging Interactions

Designed for customer-service and team management roles, this course aims to provide skills in dealing with people who are distressed, angry or otherwise challenging to manage. These situations can be one of the most difficult part of someone’s role. This can equally apply to external customers and clients, or colleagues and employees. Providing training to people likely to be exposed to challenging behaviours, to enable them to better understand what is behind the behaviour and how to safely intervene or de-escalate the situation is important for the wellbeing of those on both sides of the interaction.

Domestic violence

Interested in learning more about domestic and family violence, and how to respond? Lifeline Northern Beaches runs the nationally recognised training course DV-alert, and also runs awareness sessions in the community.
